When it comes to the community's opinions on the Star Wars films, the matter can often be highly controversial. While one episode can be loved by some, the same episode can be loathed by others. I'd like to share my own thoughts on the franchise and rank the nine episodes from worst to best.
(Note: These are simply my own opinions, and it's likely they will not coincide with yours.)
To elaborate, I don't believe any of the nine episodes are truly "bad." However, I do believe Attack of the Clones is by far the most boring. Much of the film isn't very memorable, and many of the scenes seem pointless to the overall story of the saga. Only near the end of the movie do things seem to pick up.
The Phantom Menace is definitely better than Attack of the Clones, but not by much. While the film may be boring in some scenes, it makes up for it in others. The pod race and the duel of the fates will always be iconic scenes in the Star Wars franchise.
Revenge of the Sith falls weak when compared to the rest of the saga. However, it is, in my opinion, the best film in the prequel trilogy. It completes the story of Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader and the end of his companionship with Obi-Wan Kenobi. This is done relatively well and in good faith.
The original trilogy is by far the most loved in the Star Wars fanbase, but throughout the three films, Return of the Jedi is seen as the weakest. It's still a great movie, but some aspects could have been made better when compared to Episodes IV and V.
I know this pick is going to be controversial. To be honest, I don't think The Rise of Skywalker is as bad as people say it is. It's definitely not a perfect movie, but I believe it does relatively well for what it tries to do.
As the original film that began the legendary franchise, A New Hope set the standard for all future Star Wars episodes. The film contains some of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history, and that's not simply due to its legacy. A New Hope is also a technological marvel for the time it was made.
The Empire Strikes Back takes A New Hope and exceeds it by a long shot. The Battle of Hoth is one of my favorite scenes, as well as many others. The reveal of Vader being Luke's father is possibly the most iconic movie scene in all of cinema. As of now, The Empire Strikes Back will continue to be a fan favorite.
The first entry in the sequel trilogy is a fantastic start to the story after the events of Episode VI. Every new character is memorable in some way. Starkiller Base was a great parallel to the Death Star seen in the original trilogy. Overall, it sets a great first impression for sequels.
I wrote an entirely separate piece on why I love this movie. It's a wonderful film from beginning to end. Again, definitely a controversial pick—especially for the number one spot. However, I believe The Last Jedi is much better than others say, and it's by far my favorite film in the franchise.
Like I mentioned before, these are simply my opinions on the Star Wars saga. In addition, I don't believe any of the films are truly "bad." I know many others will disagree with this list, but these are my personal beliefs on how the films should be ranked.
