How Writing Has Saved Lives(Mine Included)

“I kept always two books in my pocket: one to read, one to write in.” — Robert Louis Stevenson

Many people think that writing has become a mundane and rather obsolete thing of the past. Ever since the invention and innovation of typing, writing has become the most common form of writing. Contrary to popular belief, writing has actually saved more lives than people give it credit for. From documenting prophecies and precepts in biblical times, the mental and physical benefits, rises to fame, to the different adaptations of communication, writing has definitely proven to be influential enough to save lives, mine included.

For starters, writing has been the most common way to communicate. In biblical times, disciples or followers of Jesus would write on stone tablets about his pilgrimage, as well as the commandments, laws, and prophecies about his return that were to be foretold. All of this eventually lead to the full production of the Bible that is commonly known today, with its 66 (or original 77) books.

Laws Were Created To Prohibit People From Writing

In times of slavery, slaves were taught how to read and write. The majority of them were taught when they moved up north. Slave owners did not particularly approve of them learning how to read and write mostly because they thought that only whites were the only ones who should have that knowledge. In fact, slave owners and whites in that time were so threatened that they created laws to prevent this. In states such as South Carolina, there was a law passed that made it a crime for slaves to learn how to read. Anyone who taught them was fined 100 dollars if caught.

Writing Can Further Your Education

Writing can prove to be beneficial academically if you let it. There are many certification programs and degree courses to apply for in order to get ahead or to get your literary feet wet. There are also internships you can apply for that given the experience, allow you to express your creativity and connect with other more seasoned writers who will guide you to the path you want to go within your career.

People Have Become Famous Because Of Writing

There are numerous celebrities who have become famous because of their writing abilities but had grown up from humble beginnings. J.K. Rowling for example, who 20 years ago was a single mom who was going through a divorce, living off of government assistance when she was creating the well-known fantasy book series, Harry Potter. Jimi Hendrix, best known for being a world-renowned guitar player, and singer, wrote the majority of his catchy songs.

Writing Has Saved Me Personally

For me, writing has changed my life in so many ways. It's the primary reason why I fell in love with the art form in the first place. I've always been fascinated with books and reading where the various and descriptive worlds could take me to. In school, I used to get bullied a lot. So much so that teachers and guidance counselors became my role models when my parents offered no real solution to my dilemma. The teasing and lack of sticking up for myself finally took a toll on me. I got into fights, but no one cared. I cried, but no one dried my tears. I eventually contemplated and attempted to end my own life. To this day, I believe that if it wasn't for a counselor that told me about a better way to channel my problems into writing by applying for colleges, or starting an E-Book, I wouldn't be here to tell anyone how strong I've actually become. Because of writing, I've developed better self-esteem and have more confidence in my work. Writing is an amazing experience.

Overall, writing is a positive experience I think anyone can benefit from. Whether you just want to express your feelings, or if you want to see where your writing can truly take you, writing can save lives if you put in the time and effort to make it so.

I am an aspiring author. That means that my words have the power to appeal to the changes I want to see in this world.
