government mandated auto insurance discount for seniors
I’ve seen a lot of people ask whether insurance companies are required to give senior drivers (usually 55+, sometimes 60+) a discount — and the answer is: it depends on your state.
In some places, there are actual laws or insurance regulations that make insurers offer specific discounts to “mature drivers,” usually tied to completing an approved defensive driving or accident prevention course. But it’s definitely not universal — each state sets its own rules.
In Florida, for example, Florida Statute § 627.0652 requires every licensed auto insurer to give a discount to drivers aged 55 or older who complete a state-approved 6-hour mature driver improvement course. As long as you meet the requirements, the insurer is legally required to apply the discount.
Tennessee has a similar rule. Drivers 55 and older who complete an approved accident prevention course qualify for a mandatory discount that lasts three years from the date they complete it.
According to Compare and I Like To Dabble, roughly 34 states and the District of Columbia have some form of regulation that requires insurers to provide a discount to seniors who take an approved defensive driving or mature driver class.
Overall, several states fall under what you could call the “mandated safe driving class discount” rule — meaning insurers must give a rate reduction if you complete one of these approved courses.
