A Dual Doctorate And A Global Mission: The Academic Impact Of Dr. Jo Joseph

Dr. Jo Joseph is a scholar whose work transcends borders and disciplines, combining information technology, governance, and migration studies into a single vision that addresses complex social and technical challenges. Born on August 7, 1981, in Nedumkandam, Kerala, he experienced an early education that emphasized both academic knowledge and practical skills. He attended St. Mary’s LP School in Chembalam, Government LP School in Santhanpara, St. Maria Goretti UP School in Murikumthotti, and St. Sebastian’s High School in Nedumkandam. His post-secondary studies took place at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School in Nedumkandam, where he also completed vocational training in electrical studies, computer networking, and hardware under the Government of India’s Modular Employable Skills programs. These early experiences laid the foundation for a technical understanding that would shape his later work in information and communication technologies.

Dr. Joseph pursued higher education extensively across South India, earning a Bachelor of Science in Electronics with Computer Hardware from NSS College Rajakumari under Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam. He then embarked on postgraduate studies that combined technical expertise and social sciences. He began a Master of Science in Computer Science at MA College, Ramapuram, and later transferred to St. Antony’s College, Kanjirapally, under Bharathiar University. His technical studies continued with an MTech in Information Technology from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, while his interest in societal systems and governance led to an MPhil in Political Science from Madurai Kamaraj University, an MA in Public Administration from the University of Madras, and a Master of Social Work in Community Development from Annamalai University. This combination of technical and social education positioned him to explore how technology interacts with governance, policy, and human communities.

Dr. Joseph extended his academic pursuits to Europe, earning two doctoral degrees. His first doctorate in Information and Communication Technologies came from the University of the Balearic Islands in Palma under Professor Carlos Juiz Garcia. At the Department of Computer Architecture and Engineering, he collaborated with a research group specializing in management, innovation, and technology transfer structures. His second doctorate, in Migration Studies, was awarded by the University of Granada under Professor Francisco Javier Garcia Castano, through the Institute of Migration Studies and the Department of Humanities, Legal and Social Sciences. These two doctorates illustrate his ability to combine rigorous technical research with a deep understanding of social and ethical issues, particularly in the areas of governance, migration, and human integration.

Throughout his career, Dr. Joseph has gained professional experience in India, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Australia. His early work in India included positions at ICICI Bank in Kerala, NIMS University in Rajasthan, Digital Web and Magnus Info in Delhi, Cloudnet Technologies in Kochi, and Manvish Info Solutions in Alwaye. He expanded his international experience with NGI and Alwaqt Tech Cont LLC in Sharjah, Smart Square Tech in Dubai, Continental Systems USA Inc in Miami, and Airli Pty Ltd and Orbit Australia Pty Ltd in Sydney. These diverse roles enabled him to understand the practical application of technology and governance systems across various cultural and organizational settings, thereby strengthening the real-world relevance of his academic research.

Currently, Dr. Joseph continues his research at the University of the Balearic Islands within Professor Carlos Juiz Garcia’s group. His work focuses on management programs for research and innovation, IT governance in public and private institutions, and the role of technology in promoting social inclusion and policy effectiveness. He examines how digital systems can support ethical and efficient governance while also addressing the challenges faced by migrant populations. By integrating technical knowledge with social insights, his research demonstrates the interplay between innovation, governance, and human development.

Dr. Joseph is actively engaged with the international academic community. He serves as a reviewer and editorial board member for journals in ICT, migration, and social sciences, including the International Journal of ICT Research in Africa and the Middle East, IGI Global, Science PG, and Springer Nature journals. He is an Ambassador of the ARQUS European University Alliance and participates in initiatives with the Center for Open Science Networks in the United States. He has also been a visiting scholar at the University of Technology Sydney and collaborated with the ICT department at the University of Michigan. These engagements reflect his commitment to collaborative research and global academic networks.

His publications further illustrate the breadth of his expertise. He has authored books on IT governance, migration, and human rights, including IT Governance in an Insight of Various Management Perspectives, The Brutal Armenian Genocide Committed by the Ottoman Empire, and Christian Persecution Worldwide. He has also written numerous academic papers covering IT governance frameworks, cloud computing risk management, digital transformation in public institutions, migration patterns, social integration, agribusiness, and international policy analysis. This combination of technical, social, and policy research highlights his interdisciplinary approach and global vision.

Dr. Joseph has actively participated in national and international conferences and workshops. These include EU CHARLIE project events, doctoral student congresses in Spain, seminars on migration studies, and workshops on data analysis and research methodologies. His consistent engagement demonstrates a commitment to sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration across countries and disciplines.

On a personal level, Dr. Joseph is the youngest son of Joseph and Rosamma Joseph Kumbalamthanam, with two elder brothers, Jose Joseph and Robin Joseph. He is married to Anns Varghese, the youngest daughter of Cherian Varghese and Rachel Varghese Plathanathil. He holds Indian nationality and has lived in the European Union, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. He has traveled extensively across Europe, the Middle East, and India, speaks Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, and English, and has studied Spanish, French, and German. His hobbies include reading novels, listening to music, driving, playing shuttle badminton, and exploring information online.

Dr. Joseph is also committed to social responsibility. He has been involved with the Red Cross Spain, the Laudato Si' movement in Italy, the National Youth Project in India, the National Service Scheme in India, and Caritas International. He serves on the advisory board of Airli Pty Ltd in Australia and as Project Manager for Orbit Australia Pty Ltd.
