Southwest is getting ready for an enormous schedule expansion in 2026, with loads of new routes and more flights on existing city pairs. The airline is moving to meet a surge in demand across the United States, particularly on leisure routes. “Southwest is expanding its network in line with customer demand,” and reflecting faith that travel growth will continue.
A significant portion of that growth will take place at some existing major Southwest hubs, such as Denver International Airport and Harry Reid International Airport, where the airline now has hundreds of daily departures. These hubs are instrumental for bringing travelers in from elsewhere in the nation. “Denver is Southwest’s busiest airport by departures,” and so crucial to the airline’s expansion, he said.
The carrier is expanding both new nonstop routes and additional services on existing ones, particularly to cities including Orlando, Phoenix and Nashville. These additional routes offer travelers more options for when they can depart throughout the day. Southwest flies an all-Boeing 737 fleet, which allows the airline to expand while flying more frequent service.
Passengers will experience more flexibility, increased connections and perhaps even reduced fares as more seats enter the market. Spare flights also facilitate schedule planning by allowing for fewer disruptions. “More flights equals more choices and better convenience,” especially for the business and leisure traveler.
Southwest Airlines' 2026 expansion is another sign that the airline’s empire-building is focused on bulking up its core network, as opposed to rapid international growth. The carrier plans to keep tweaking schedules as demand changes. This steady growth ensures Southwest remains one of the United States’ largest and most accessible airlines.
