Safe Home Remedies To Clean A Nose Piercing

It should be cleaned twice daily until the piercing has healed, which depends entirely on where on the nose the piercing is. But keeping a nose piercing clean does not just mean putting a type of rinse on it, it also means that you are simply taking care not to get it dirty.

A nose piercing is a really cool and fun piece of body jewelry that both men and women can enjoy. Although people only have one nose, we have found plenty of places to pierce it. The Nostril, Septum, High Nostril, Septril, Rhino, Austin Bar, Nasallang, Bridge and Third Eye, are all types of nose piercings that people like to have. While getting a nose piercing is really exciting, it is also a lot of work to clean it and make sure it does not get infected. It should be cleaned twice daily until the piercing has healed, which depends entirely on where on the nose the piercing is. But keeping a nose piercing clean does not just mean putting a type of rinse on it, it also means that you are simply taking care not to get it dirty.

Last year, my sister got her nostril pierced and we wanted to know the best ways to keep it clean so it would not get infected in the two to four month period it takes to heal. So, here is a list of home remedies we have learned about how to help keep a nose piercing, where ever it may be on the nose, clean and safe.

1. Do not touch your piercing under any circumstances. You do not want germs and harmful bacteria to effect the pierced area while it is trying to heal. If you must touch your nose (itchy noses and allergies happen) then you should  wash your hands first and clean the nose piercing with a cleaning solution. But what if you run out of the cleaning solution you get right after the piercing? You make your own at home, of course!

2. To make your own nose piercing cleaning solution (AKA saline rinse) you will need 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt mixed with warm distilled water. You can  apply the solution on with a cotton ball or swab by gently dabbing the pierced area. Make sure you are only dabbing the pierced area and not allowing the cotton ball/ swab to get caught in the ring as this could cause an infection. Another way to clean the piercing with the solution is to simply put your nose in the water while breathing out of your mouth. Either way of applying the saline rinse is fine as long as you do it twice daily for the duration of the healing period and you are gently applying it. As you are cleaning it, make sure to gently remove any crust on the piercing by gently dabbing it or soaking your nose in the saline until it falls off on its own.

3. Remember that the piercing is essentially an open injury and it needs time to heal properly. So along with not touching it, resist the urge to change or move around the nose ring until you have gone a little over the estimated time of healing. The piercing may look healed on the outside, but the nose has a lot of cartilage and it takes time for the inside of the piercing where you can't see it time to heal too.

4. Avoid putting anything on your face (besides the saline, of course) until the piercing is healed. The nose piercing could get irritated by creams and lotions. This part is very important: When you are taking a shower, definitely do not let soap get onto the piercing. Just like the cotton, you don't want the soap to cause an infection. Also, don't try to clean the piercing with hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or the like. The Piercing needs time to heal and it needs the softest solutions on it to keep it clean and safe

For my sister, these easy-to-do at home remedies protected her nose ring from getting infected or irritated. For many people, a new piercing, especially on a place so noticeable as the nose, may be a bit scary because it does take time and effort to heal and no one wants an infected nose. But as long as you are cleaning it with saline and not touching it, you and your piercing will be fine!
