With a plain room, a great way to decorate it is with photos or pictures, which is perfect since you would have many with friends and family. Importantly, there are many different ways to display photos and truly, they all look amazing. I think it's heart-warming to display photos not only because it looks good but also because of the memories they hold.

In addition, they can make use of the wall, desk, shelf or use tape or hooks that won't damage your wall. There are so many ways to decorate and personalise your room with photos - you probably haven't seen all of these.

Here are a few ideas many people have done that you can use to decorate your room with photos. Moreover, they're super cheap and easy for lazy people like me.

Best 13 easiest, most creative ways to decorate your room with pictures:

1. Heart design on your wall

One of the most popular designs you'll see everywhere is a heart design made out of photos. By making a picture out of your pictures, it's unique and interesting. Thus, it'll suit those who want something more complicated to make a plain room look aesthetic.

Alternatively, you can make other shapes like a star or a tree. Indeed, I think it's a nice way to personalise your room that speaks of your likes and helps you be creative and stand out.

What can you use to stick pictures on the wall?

You can use tape or double-sided tape to stick pictures on the wall and there is picture hanging tape or strips made for the wall, which can hold light photos.

2. Peg your photos onto a string display

Another popular idea that's my personal favourite is using pegs or clothespins to put the photos on a line of string, yarn, rope or twine. I like it because it's cheap and looks aesthetically pleasing. You can tie the string around stick-on hooks, nails or other things. I have many durable stick-on hooks in my house that have lasted many years and although it may not fit the photo aesthetic, you hardly notice it.

It adds layers of creativity to the wall and room with different materials and shapes (the string line and pegs) instead of just photos.

Clearly, this is good if you want something creative and homey. It'll suit any wall or room. Notably, it's an amazing way to display other things like drawings. The photos are easily removable as it uses pegs so you can change photos often if you want.

Tip: You can use wooden pegs for a vintage, simple feel that matches brown string and any photo since it's neutral. Alternatively, colourful pegs can brighten up your room with a happy, fresh vibe.

In my room, I use wooden pegs to hang my photos as they can go with my colourful pictures, paper ornaments and other crafted souvenirs. Moreover, I used blue-tack to stick the string to the wall but I don't recommend it much as it needs a lot to stay on the wall and it used to keep falling down from the weight of the photos. But, I only put on a few photos now and it doesn't fall anymore.

3. Use fairy lights

A level up from string is using fairy lights, which is very popular. The downside is that it's slightly more expensive for fairy lights and it uses electricity to look nice. However, the positive side is that it looks brighter and much more beautiful and aesthetic. It also adds more to the design with lights instead of just pictures.

Furthermore, you can use wooden pegs or colourful pegs like before.

Many of my friends have fairy lights to decorate their room and it definitely makes it look amazing. Ultimately, I highly recommend it if you want something stylish, trendy and cool.

4. Geometric string shape

I think using the string in a geometric shape looks unique and cool, kind of like the mindmaps in detective movies. You can make it by connecting the string to multiple nails, hooks or spots in any way you like. Then, attach the photos with pegs or clips.

It's nice and cheap and a fun activity that I've always wanted to try.

So, if you want something different, quirky and want to do some creative DIY, try making a geometric shape with the string. However, since it's more complex and busy, it might suit plain rooms instead of full, colourful rooms more to liven up a simple room.

5. Simply stick them on the wall

If you're a perfectionist or like something simple and organised, you can simply stick the photos on the wall. It's common and neat if you want a straight, tidy design like a grid, especially if your room has a lot of things. Positively, it'll go well with any wall colour and room.

6. Frame your photos

For people who want a professional and elegant idea, you can frame your photos. This is a common and simple style but to spice it up, a different idea I like is writing on the frame such as your name in beautiful handwriting. All in all, there are a variety of frames and you can use many types to never get bored and make it look good in a mix and match way.

Furthermore, you can use hooks or stick-on hooks to put your photos on. With hooks and frames, it's slightly more expensive than these other options but it'll definitely work well on many walls and for the future. My family and many others frame photos to hang on the wall and it personalises our house well.

7. Tape frames

A unique idea not often seen (and I just found out about) is using tape for frames. First, stick your photos onto the wall. Second, stick tape (or washi tape) around it. I recommend having a gap between the tape and the photo - roughly 1cm but you can change up the gap size.

Now, to make it pretty, use colourful, patterned tape that go well together or you can mix them up. It'll make plain walls and rooms more lively.

So, if you want something super cheap instead of buying photo frames, you can use tape. Additionally, it'll catch visitors' attention as a quirky design and it's colourful. The DIY is perfect for people who want to be creative.

What is washi tape?

Washi tape is coloured and patterned masking tape made of rice paper and is often used for various arts and crafts since it is multi-purpose.

Can you decorate walls with washi tape?

Washi tape is easily removable so you can stick it on the wall and it won't damage the wall or leave a sticky residue. In effect, you can use washi tape to decorate your wall.

8. Rainbow or colourful display

Another way to stick photos on the wall in a cool way is to use a rainbow or colour coordinated design. Rainbow or ombre from a light shade of a colour to a darker shade is popular. Furthermore, this can be through the colour of the photo frame or the colour theme of the photo. You'll just have to make sure that it goes well with the colour scheme of your wall and room.

I put pictures up on one side of my wall and realised they all have blue in them. So on the other wall, I stuck pictures with red in them. Notably, they were often subtle, which I think makes it more intriguing and eye-catching.

You'll love this if you want a satisfying and aesthetic design with colours. Clearly, it's pleasing to look at and is quite trendy. If your plain, neutral wall seems boring, spice it up with colour.

9. Photos hanging down

A unique, cool idea is attaching photos to string hanging down vertically. First, you stick a few pictures on a piece of string with gaps between them and you can use tape to attach them. Do this for multiple strings. Next, stick the top of the strings to the wall (such as with washi tape) or tie it to hooks.

The photos hang down and I think it's great if you want to decorate the whole length of a wall. Additionally, it's more stylish and trendy.

If you like nature or want a creative, 3D dimension, a popular idea people have done is attaching the string to a tree branch. Depending on the branch, you can put it on hooks, off a shelf or on other furniture.

10. Hang photos on clipboards

A different theme is putting your photos on clipboards. Uniquely, you can hang clipboards on your wall hooks and clip photos on them. Or, you can stand the clipboards up on your desk. It's a great way to make use of clipboards if you have some at home or you can buy them quite cheaply.

I think this will suit someone who wants a quirky style in their room. Significantly, it also has the benefit of easily changing pictures as you just clip it on the clipboard and you can hang other things like notes or calenders as I recommend.

11. Display photos on your desk

For those who want a really easy and cheap option, you can even just place the photos on your desk. Surprisingly, it looks just as amazing. I have many frameless photos on my desk and when I'm working, it motivates me and gives me something nice to look at.

Tip: To make it interesting, I have pictures of different sizes and shapes and alternate them for variety. For example, it goes from a vertical photo to a landscape one to a bigger one.

Moreover, if you already have an art painting on your wall or there's no space for your photos on the wall, putting them on your desk is a great idea that will make your table look nice. You can have them in frames or without frames - just propped up against the wall or something else like pencil holders as I do.

Therefore, it's ideal for people who want to use photos to decorate something other than the wall, and the same goes for the next idea. And, it can cost you nothing if you don't want to buy frames. (Perfect for someone lazy like me who also doesn't want to spend money for it.)

12. Display photos on shelves

Alternatively, if you have a shelf, it works really nice to put your photos there. My cousins have an array of cube-like shelves on the wall with each just fitting one framed photo in each. It makes the wall and shelf look more appealing with a unique, 3D vibe. Similar to before, you can frame the pictures or lean them against the wall or something else like a book.

Indeed, it's cheap as it makes use of the shelf in your house. I think it'll be perfect if you want something to stand out more yet look organised and simplistic or professional.

13. Tape the photos to the wall, showing the tape

Instead of using double-sided tape and hiding the tape behind the photo, why not try using tape on the top of the photo to stick it to the wall? While you may think it looks lazy, I think it looks unique and artsy - like a scrapbook feel.

Notably, it's so good because it makes your room interesting and different but lets you be lazy and super cheap. You can use tape or the amazing washi tape for bright colours and to not ruin your wall. Furthermore, this idea is something I haven't seen a lot so I think it'll definitely stand out.

In summary, these are all amazing ways to decorate your room with photos in a cheap, easy way. Choosing one now depends on your personality, photos and your room to make them the most effective and satisfying.
