The ever-so-popular short video app TikTok has really seen its rise to power since the Pandemic started. Whether it's clever lifehacks or fun dances, everyone has found something on TikTok they can relate to.

When it comes to how the algorithm works, it watches what you like, what you watch all the way through, and what you share with your friends and decides what to show you based on that. By repeatedly viewing videos with similar topics or styles, you are then shown more like it. This is how you get on a "side of TikTok". There are hundreds if not thousands of these sides, some more niche than others. Here is a list of some of the best sides of TikTok you haven't gotten on yet.

1. Disability TikTok

There are many people out there who got extremely comfortable talking to an audience they cant see. Plenty of differently-abled people have started going on TikTok to educate the general population about their way of life. There are even deaf and blind individuals teaching ASL and Braille to viewers. Everything from autism to cancer, alopecia to Tourettes, is being talked about by those who have it so others know how to properly address the issue, know why they behave the way they do, and, most importantly, that they're just like everyone else, only a bit more unique.

2. Nerd TikTok

All our middle school passions have come soaring back to the surface. Whether it was Harry Potter or Twilight, Star Wars or Marvel, it's all on TikTok. Many have started to truly embrace what they love, showing off their huge collections, making videos showcasing the beauty of the films, and exploring the fan theories they've had brewing in their heads since 2013.

3. Hank Green TikTok

As half of the VlogBrothers and a huge contributor to CrashCourse (two youtube channels many watched in high school), Hank Green is the dad the internet needed. Got a random science question? Want to know something really obscure? Hank Green can answer it. Many people tag him in videos and comments in hopes of getting a response and he responds to a lot of them. He's here to educate and make it fun.

4. Aesthetic TikTok

This is a trend that showcases the beauty in everyday life. There are two sides to this. The first is people who record themselves doing average everyday things and put pretty music behind it just to show how pretty simple things can be when you take the time to appreciate it. The second is people who mesh together images or videos with similar thematic elements (such as color, movement, styling, or content) and add music or even lines from movies that match what they're showing. They even give the different aesthetics names. some of the most popular are Dark Academia, Vintage, or Cottagecore. It's a very pretty, visually-pleasing trend.

5. Filmmakers TikTok

TikTok has allowed many high school and college amateur filmmakers to have a platform to showcase what they make. They can make short, 30 second videos that capture the entirety of a full-length film or simply use the 15 seconds to tell their own story. It's truly an awesome way to allow filmmakers to showcase what they're capable of, making a visual portfolio for potential jobs.

6. Artist/Small Business TikTok

TikTok has given countless small businesses and artists a way to advertise for free. Whether they make jewelry, paintings, clothing, or anything else, it's allowed many to brag about what they make and sell. It really shows how much small businesses matter and how awesome they can be. TikTok even started a creator's fun during the pandemic to help those with small businesses thrive.

8. Book TikTok

Many people have had more time on their hands than ever in the past. People have taken the time to get back into reading. They've started making book reviews, rating books, talking about how classics need to be updated, and regressing into the YA novel obsession many had in middle school. It's become beautiful to watch those showcase the best parts of the movies and talk about how they would cast them if they ever got remade. People still love books, even if it doesn't seem like it.

Although it may seem like getting dressed up is pointless amid a pandemic, people are still showing off their favorite outfits. Fashion students and designers alike have showcased what they made, how they like to dress, their favorite trends, what they would wear in TV shows, and so much more. A current popular trend is how you would dress in the front row of different designer fashion shows. There are even some really awesome people who teach others how to sew, even going so far as showing how they make gorgeous gowns.

New Musician TikTok

Although Youtube started the trend of people posting singing videos, TikTok allows users to watch for shorter periods of time to keep the attention of the audience a little better. There are people all over who use TikTok to show off their talents. Some even show what their shows look like (back when cafes and clubs hosted shows), making it seem super personal and like everyone should come to check them out.

As hard as it is to admit, most of us spend way too long scrolling through the neverending feed of random short videos. If you ever get bored or want something new to look at, there are some really fun, niche bits of the app that can be fun to explore for a night or two. Who knows, you may even learn a thing or two.
