Billie Eilish Album Review, When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?

For this review I will go in depth where my mind went behind each song and the album as a whole.

1. Bad Guy --- It's about her being a bad person. Not necessarily a bad girl which is more submissive, but a bad guy seems more dominant letting the partner know that  even though they think that they have control in the relationship they really don't. And isn't that the biggest turn on about the song? It has a seductive and playful melody that catches your ear but essentially tells you straight up what it's all about.
2. Xanny
Talking about friends and drugs. Being around young people that are essentially trying to drown their worries with cigarettes, alcohol, and xans to feel better. My favorite part of the song is towards the end where she says “Please don't try to kiss me on the sidewalk/ On your cigarette break/ I can't afford to love someone/ Who is dying by mistake in Silver Lake” she doesn't want to kiss someone who doesn't love themselves essentially. I love her melodic voice over heavy bass.

4. See me in a crown

Which one is worse, living or dying first? When she is singing this it's like her voice is crawling and conquering the people who didn't think she'd make it. Or at least that is my interpretation, when people think you are just pretty that's all you have to offer and with this song she is turning around and telling the naysayer that one day she will conquer all. She is queen.

5 . all the good girls go to hell

This one is sort of interesting because it may be cross referencing the American Dream and Heaven as something that is not attainable.  In her lyrics she stated that “Pearly gates look more like a picket fence” saying that she is looking at this from an outside perspective that is too good to be true. She wants the best for everyone and in that she loses herself to this dream. Giving people the benefit of the doubt isn't always the best solution when they are intending to hurt you. She also mentions the hills of California were burning which in the recent past they were but this seemed more biblical. From the perspective of a god (I’m assuming) in the second verse explaining that man is such a fool begging for help when they did this to themselves. “Peter should have known better” is a reference to us humans knowing that we should be good but we choose to be bad.

6. Wish you were gay

Ever been with someone you really wanted to be with but they didn't like you that way? This is a great song for unrequited love and she put a lovely spin. The line “to give your lack of interest an explanation” resonates so hard when you are dating and it just doesn't work out. The line “”wish you were gay is her wanting to have a clearer explanation on why the relationship didn't work out and sometimes we just don't get those explanations.

7. When the party’s over

When you are at a party, you leave and you get that 3am “wyd/ U up?” txt. What do you do? In a very non committal age we are reaching a point where our boundaries are getting tested more and more with the friends with benefits situations.

9.my strange addiction

The title invites the listener to remember the show my strange addiction( at least for me). The line  “one of us is going to lose ” makes me think of the relationship as a situationship where one person falls for the other but knowing that the relationship isn't going anywhere.  My favorite was “you tell me things fall apart like i don't know”.

10. Bury a friend - This one was the first I heard of Billie Eilish and made me think of performance dance and immediately started a head roll and a snap. With its rollercoaster vibe and sinister undertones she says she initially wants to end herself. That could be that she is within a dream she would like to end. I have always been into finding dream meanings and this song fascinated me especially the title to match.

Overall wonderful compilation of songs and made me think of it in a deeper sense. Hitting all of the good points of relationship dynamics and the concept of the American dream, life and death over love. The artists juxtaposition in style and beat choice is illuminating.
