Many Pokemon fans have been wondering for years what Pokemon MMO would look like, and players finally get a tiny glimpse into what could have been with one of the canceled games.  Back in 2004, a development company called iQue was working on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game featuring Pokemon. The project was kept secret from fans. This now-defunct PC game would have used Game Boy Advance as controller and would have had online and offline mode.

This would have been a Generation 3 Game based on Fire Red and Leaf Green. Similar to the canceled Pokemon Yellow companion game called Pokemon Pink, fans were disappointed to hear that game like this was canceled. Fans have been calling for MMO for years with the Pokemon theme, and it's a little heartbreaking to know one could happen. With rare Pokemon cards selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars, the franchise is still alive and well all over the world, and people still clamor to buy Pokemon games, merchandise, and other collectibles.

PokeMMO brings the Pokemon franchise into the modern era. An online version of your favorite game boy advance game is now multiplayer. This is a fan-made MMORPG that is a ROM hack that uses Pokemon Fire Red, Soul Silver, Emerald, Platinum, Black & White Version to create a pokemon experience with other real-life players. While all those Versions of pokemon are favorites to many, If you ever wanted to travel around the pokemon world with your friends this is the game to play. This is much better than emulating old Pokemon games.

Along with being able to play with your friends, there are also people around the world walking around going on their own adventures. If you want you can chat, trade, or battle with them. PokeMMO is pretty much the Gameboy version of pokemon games with the MMO aspects on top.

The story and music are the same, along with the art style for each respective region, but your character's art style doesn't change. Playing with friends sets this game apart from other pokemon games however it's not a real co-op, meaning you can't do doubles together unless you're in battle frontier or doubles in tourneys. You can Co-op certain parts of the game like the battle frontier. The MMO aspect makes this feel like a living breathing world with trainers and pokemon at every corner.

Battles have an added difficulty, most gyms, and there have been some move pool and learn set changes to balance the game out. You can travel between regions freely as long as you have 4 badges in your starting one.

You also have this thing called the GTL where you can buy and sell pokemon as well as vanities and items. Shinies are a 1/30k chance now, hordes are a thing, lukcy egg is consumable, amulet coin too, amongst other things. Lv caps are also a thing and TMs are consumable. Also, IVs and EVs are visible which is astonishing.

PokeMMO Pros

  • Pros are definitely the MMO aspects as well as being able to travel freely. You get to have a gen 5 pokemon on your team in Kanto, you can have pokemon follow you everywhere, you get to experience events with friends, enjoy competitive battling in several tiers including LC, also teams are a thing so you can enjoy the game with your team, which I've found has been so much fun.
  • Seasons are in real life. So when it's summer in real life it's summer in the game, the trees are green, winter they are snowy or a darker bluish-green, autumn you have red/brown trees. You can build bases reminiscent of the secret base features in Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. There are a lot more things you will find fun while playing.
  • You don't need a good pc to run these games and it is not that hard to get into. The game developers did a great job rebalancing everything to make this game an actual challenge. Personally prefer a challenge so I can feel the satisfaction of winning.
  • In this game, they have an entire pokemon black market. You can search up a pokemon or item you want, use some poke dollars (In-game currency), and the item and pokemon are yours. The prices are never so low that the game is too easy. The lowest price is like 3,000 for most things.
  • There is only one of each legendary pokemon and each trainer who catches it has to defend themselves as in they have to accept every single battle request if they are beaten in battle then the legendary pokemon goes to the winner. If they are offline for too long then the pokemon goes back to its cave until another trainer finds and catches them.
  • They also Host tournaments where trainers go to test their strength on a pokemon league like the tournament. If you don't like fighting you can always just watch. You can also do this with normal battles. You can even make bets with your friends on who you think is going to win.

PokeMMO CONS

  • As for cons, well Level caps actually prohibit you from leveling past a certain level, TMs, and other consumable items as well as breeding make the game a bit of a grind to play sometimes.
  • Since you will need money for a lot of things you will have to grind for it sometimes, but there are a lot of easy ways to get money, such as the new and revamped berry system. You don't get to catch all the legendaries like the Gameboy version games which makes it is quite different.
  • It can sometimes be a bit crowded in some areas but if it really bothers you can always switch channels.
  • All the flaws it has are flaws that were already in the older games. They don't include some of the good changes that the newer games have.
  • Another thing PokeMMO did to increase difficulties is to not tell you what pokemon someone is sending out before they do it. This isn't a change that makes it unfair but makes you plan ahead on which pokemon you send out beforehand.

HOW TO PLAY!

Overall the game is quite enjoyable and I love it so far! The game can be played at https://pokemmo.eu/. All you need to do is make an account, download the client onto your computer, search the web for your favorite pokemon ROMs, Head to the developer's instructions for a rundown of how to get PokeMMO working on your PC, and you will be good to start your new adventure! The game can also be played on your android mobile device and it runs perfectly.
