The Real Avengers Of K-pop: Omega X Or SuperM?

Ever since the debut of SuperM, they've been known as the Avengers of K-pop and they've gotten popular all around the world. While I agree they fit the title, a newer boy group has caught some attention and seem to suit the title as well, which will be the main focus here. The 11-member boy group, Omega X is showing familiar faces that we love and is the first K-pop group made from disbanded groups. 

Omega X

Omega X is a South Korean boy group under the entertainment company Spire Entertainment. Omega X debuted on 30 June 2021 with their first mini-album VAMOS that had the title track of the same name. Importantly, Omega X is a permanent group and they are not a temporary project group.

The name, Omega X, is from the Greek alphabet 'Omega' meaning the 'end' or 'final'. Secondly, the 'X' means the unknown. Therefore, Omega X aims to be the 'final boss' of K-pop as they later discover infinite possibilities with their fans.

There are 11 members in Omega X and they decided to not have any positions, so there's no leader in Omega X, nor designated main vocalists or dancers. The members have all debuted in previous groups, most of which have disbanded. 

Omega X's members consist of Jaehan (SPECTRUM), Hwichan (Limitless), Sebin (SNUPER), Hangyeom (Seven O'Clock), Taedong (GIDONGDAE), Xen (1TEAM as Jinwoo), Jehyun (1TEAM), Kevin (ENOi as Jinwoo), Junghoon (ENOi as J-Kid), Hyuk (ENOi as Gun) and Yechan (1THE9).

On 6 September 2021, two months after their debut, Omega X will release their first single album called WHAT'S GOIN' ON for their first comeback. It's sure to be another success like their first album - where their debut VAMOS sold out their first batch of 20,000 albums in less than a week and had to make more.

Why is Omega X called the Avengers of K-pop?

Omega X is often called the Avengers of K-pop because the group is made of talented idols who have debuted in other K-pop groups, or were about to debut and released a pre-debut track. Notably, most of them were the 'mains' of their former groups (i.e. main vocalist, main dancer, main rapper).

Unfortunately, almost all of their former groups disbanded except for two of the groups who are currently inactive on hiatus. Therefore, Omega X is a second chance for these idols to keep their dream of performing. Omega X has members coming from 8 different groups.

Since they all have experience, it makes the group stronger and more professional where they don't seem like rookies. Their reality show 'LOADING - ONE MORE CHANX' significantly shows their teamwork and close relationship so you see them get along and do well together. I enjoyed watching it and seeing them practice. They discussed that as they've faced struggles and pain like disbandment, they're working harder so I'm really cheering them on. 

This is their second chance and hopefully, it'll succeed and they won't need another as they've shown great performances as a group.

Indeed, many comments on their music video show that fans agree that they are K-pop Avengers and I think it's a great title that suits them.

Who are the members of Omega X?

• Jaehan

Kim Jae Han was born on 1 July 1995 and is the oldest member. Jaehan is a former member of the group SPECTRUM, where he was the main vocalist. Unfortunately, SPECTRUM disbanded on 10 July 2020 due to COVID-19. He was also part of the duo OneVoices. Furthermore, Jaehan is Korean and is 179 cm tall. 

• Hwichan

Lee Hwi Chan was born on 18 April 1996 and he's Korean and 172 cm. Hwichan is the main vocalist for the boy group Limitless with the stage name Raychan. However, Limitless is inactive but still together despite their company shutting down.

• Sebin

Jang Se Bin was born on 24 April 1996. Sebin is a member of the boy group SNUPER as a rapper, vocalist, face of the group and maknae. But, SNUPER is currently inactive because of military enlistments. Since SNUPER debuted in 2015, Sebin has the most experience in the K-pop industry out of Omega X. Additionally, he is 181 cm and Korean.

• Hangyeom

Song Han Gyeom was born on 17 July 1996 and his birth name before he legally changed it was Song Yeon Geun. Hangyeom is a former member of the group Seven O'Clock under the stage name A-Day but they disbanded on 2 March 2021. In Seven O'Clock, he was the leader, main rapper, main dancer, vocalist and visual.

Moreover, Hangyeom ranked 6th on MIXNINE and was set to debut but the debut was cancelled. He is Korean and 176 cm tall. Hangyeom was also the first member to be revealed.

• Taedong

Kim Tae Dong was born on 7 November 1997. Taedong is a former member of the group GIDONGDAE and he was the main dancer. GIDONGDAE was set to debut in 2020 and released a pre-debut song called 'Party Like This' on 3 June 2020, but they announced their disbandment on 12 January 2021.

Furthermore, Taedong was in the survival show BOYS24 and ranked 30th on Produce 101 Season 2. He is also Korean and 177 cm.

• Xen

Xen's real name is Lee Jin Woo (but he used a stage name since there are two Jinwoos in the group). Xen was born on 20 February 1998 and was the main vocalist of 1TEAM under the name Jinwoo. Sadly, 1TEAM disbanded on 14 March 2021.

Xen was the last member of the group. Also, he is Korean and 172 cm. 

• Jehyun

Moon Je Hyun was born on 20 April 1999. Jehyun is a former member of the group 1TEAM, where he was the main dancer and a vocalist. Additionally, he is Korean and 175 cm.

• Kevin

Kevin's real name is Park Jin Woo (but he used a stage name due to two Jinwoos in the group). Kevin was born on 12 January 2000. Kevin was a sub vocalist of the group ENOi with the stage name Jinwoo but ENOi disbanded on 22 January 2021. He is the shortest of the group (167 cm) and is Korean.

• Junghoon

Han Jeong Hoon was born on 14 February 2000. Junghoon is a former member of ENOi, where he had the stage name J-Kid and was the main dancer and lead vocalist. He is Korean and 177 cm. Not to mention, Junghoon was the first member to join Spire Entertainment and the second member of the group.

• Hyuk

Yang Hyuk was born on 15 March 2000. Hyuk is a former member of ENOi under the stage name Gun and he was the lead rapper, sub vocalist, visual and maknae. Hyuk is Korean and 183 cm, making him one of the tallest members of Omega X.

• Yechan

Shin Ye Chan is the maknae (the youngest) and was born on 14 May 2001. Yechan was the main vocalist and lead dancer of the group 1THE9. The survival show to make the boy group 1THE9 was Under 19, where Yechan ranked 4th to secure his spot out of the 9 debuting idols.

1THE9 disbanded on 8 August 2020 because it was a temporary project group formed from the survival show Under 19. 

In addition, Yechan is the tallest in Omega X (along with Hyuk) where he is 183 cm, and he's Korean. 

On the other hand, SuperM is a K-pop group that debuted earlier and is more popular. 

SuperM

SuperM is a South Korean 'supergroup' formed under SM Entertainment and Capitol Records of USA. SuperM debuted on 4 October 2019 and focus on promoting overseas. There are 7 members in SuperM and they have all debuted in other groups that they currently promote with.

SuperM's members consist of Baekhyun (EXO), Taemin (SHINee), Kai (EXO), Taeyong (NCT), Ten (NCT), Lucas (NCT), and Mark (NCT). 

SuperM has not disbanded and they are still active as they are a permanent unit group but will take longer to comeback as the members are in other groups as well. 

In addition, SuperM was created to show a strong synergy between the West and East, connecting globally as well as connecting the strong idols from different groups and music generations. 

Some people think that SuperM is a flop and fans say that it may seem this way since the members might look awkward with each other but they've succeeded in sales, popularity and their music is really good - I even love their b-sides as other fans do. Of course, they seem much closer now, especially after their reality show 'MTOPIA'.

To emphasise their achievements, their debut song Jopping currently has more than 104 million views.

Why is SuperM called the Avengers of K-pop?

SuperM is called the Avengers of K-pop because the group is made of strong idols from other debuted groups under SM Entertainment. These idols are known for being the mains (e.g. main dancer) of their groups and are the most popular or promoted. Therefore, the talent is insanely amazing. 

Clearly, they've shown to be as powerful as the Avengers as they gained huge success and popularity around the world. This was largely helped due to them being from a big company where SM is one of the 'Big three' entertainment companies and the idols (and their other groups) are already well known and classics such as SHINee. 

Who are the members of SuperM?

• Baekhyun

Byun Baek Hyun is the leader of SuperM and a main vocalist. Baekhyun is the oldest of the group, born on 6 May 1992, and he's 174 cm. He is also in the group EXO and has released solo songs.

• Taemin

Lee Tae Min is the main dancer, main vocalist and center. Taemin was born on 18 July 1993 and is 174 cm. Notably, Taemin is also in the group SHINee and is known for many solo songs. 

• Kai

Kai's real name is Kim Jong In and he was born on 14 January 1994. Kai is the main dancer, lead vocalist, and sub rapper of the group EXO. In addition, Kai made his solo debut on 30 November 2020. He is also 182 cm.

• Taeyong

Lee Tae Yong is the main rapper, lead dancer, sub vocalist and center of the group NCT (and is in the subunits NCT U and NCT 127). Taeyong was born on 1 July 1995 and is 174 cm. 

• Ten

Ten's birth name (Thai) is Chittaphon Leechaiyapornkul. Ten's Korean name is Lee Young Heum and his Chinese name is Li Yong Qin. He is ethnically Chinese although his nationality is Thai and he was born in Thailand. Moreover, Ten is the lead dancer, lead vocalist and sub rapper. He's in the group NCT and its subgroups NCT U and WayV. Ten was born on 27 February 1996 and is 172 cm. 

• Lucas

Lucas' birth name (Chinese) is Huang Xuxi/Wong Yuk-hei and his Korean name is Hwang Wook Hee. He is half Chinese (father) and half Thai (mother) but was born in Hong Kong, China. Lucas is the lead rapper and is in the group NCT (as well as the subgroups NCT U and WayV). Furthermore, Lucas was born on 25 January 1999 and is 183 cm. 

• Mark

Mark's birth name is Mark Lee and his Korean name is Lee Min Hyung. He is Korean-Canadian and was born in Toronto but moved to Vancouver when he was very young. Mark is the main rapper, lead dancer, sub vocalist and maknae. Also, he's in the group NCT and its subgroups NCT U, NCT 127 and NCT DREAM.

Mark was born on 2 August 1999 and is 175 cm.

Are the real Avengers of K-pop Omega X or SuperM?

While Omega X and SuperM have both been deemed the Avengers of K-pop, they fit the title in similar ways but also slightly different ways. SuperM is more successful and popular, especially around the world due to their overseas promotion and USA collaboration so the title is more known for them. 

At the same time, Omega X follows the same idea of being a permanent group with all the members having already debuted in another group and being strong, talented (and often 'mains') from their other group. But I like how Omega X has more members and they're from 8 different groups so it's more diverse like the Avengers and it keeps more groups alive in our hearts.

On the contrary, SuperM only has members from 3 different groups (I count WayV as part of NCT), yet I think it's good for them as more of them know each other well.

Next, I think Omega X benefits as it is the only group the members are currently in and they all live in the dorm together. So they would have better teamwork and friendship and comeback more often. In contrast, SuperM members are all in one or more other groups and are thus busy. This means that it will take longer for SuperM to comeback each time and it's more like a side group. (But I guess that's like the actual Avengers having solo movies.)

It's sad that Omega X is more underrated and lesser-known; even the disbanded groups of the members are as well. Thus many may not know them as the Avengers of K-pop but I hope more people will recognise them as this title and be interested in them.

So, I think Omega X is more of an Avengers of K-pop as it has members from many different groups while SuperM is more of an Avengers of SM as it only has members from SM Entertainment groups but they're more globally successful.

In conclusion, although I am more interested in Omega X, I think both are worthy of the title of the Avengers of K-pop and I'm a fan of both groups. Omega X and SuperM are clearly both talented and well put together to be the K-pop Avengers. And as SuperM is currently quiet, Omega X is still giving out great content that you should check out.
