It can be overwhelming putting together a wardrobe, especially if you're starting from scratch. There are so many different clothing combinations that the possibilities seem endless. When I started revamping my wardrobe, I found that it was easiest to start with the shoes. What good are cute outfits if you're going to wear the same pair of shoes with each one?
The sheer variety of women's shoes makes it difficult to choose. At the end of the day, we want them all, right? So how do you know where to start? Staying inside for a year has given me the opportunity to study modern, everyday fashion and discern between must-haves and passables.
You might be tempted to fill your closet with bold, statement pieces. After all, fashionistas take risks. While it's necessary to have a number of eye-catching shoes, you don't want too many shoes that will only go with one outfit. It's essential to have a good set of reliable, versatile shoes that can be mixed and matched with different fits.
There are a handful of shoes that go with any look, such as flats, skate shoes, strappy sandals, white low-tops, and more.
Simple white shoes are a wardrobe staple. When properly taken care of, these shoes add a crisp, clean look to any outfit. Every brand has their variation of the white low-top sneaker, but two must-haves are the Nike Air Force 1s and Adidas Superstars.
Some argue that these shoes can not be paired with everything. On the contrary, I haven't seen white low-tops paired with an outfit and not look stylish. They can make a dress look more casual, or work with a simple T-shirt and jeans to put together a relaxed, classic look.
You can dress up any outfit with a pair of simple black boots. Well-fitted boots can accentuate your calves and legs. When coupled with an item like a bodycon dress, you could put together an ensemble that brings out the best of your curves.
Although boots are usually viewed as spring and winter footwear, they can also make your OOTD look more sophisticated during the hotter months. Thigh-high black boots, denim shorts, and oversized shades scream warm summer nights.
Though they might not always be the most comfortable, having a pair of simple heels is essential to any wardrobe. They match well with every type of clothing, from dresses to jeans to sweatpants. It's beneficial to have a pair of closed-toe heels around in case you need to look professional in a pinch. On the other hand, a dainty open-toed design can upgrade a pair of ripped jeans. Whichever direction you chose to go in, make sure you have a neutral-colored pair on hand.
Pairing your outfit with a couple of colorful wedges can add a splash of personality to an outfit. They are a chic alternative to normal heels, and not to mention slightly more comfortable. They provide the perfect balance between dressy and casual. Weaved patterns can be an accessory to an otherwise plain outfit, while solid color variations add a glossy finish to a girly outfit.
Slippers were originally intended for indoor use, but lately, they've been making appearances elsewhere. Fashionistas have begun to wear them outside of the house, leading to some fascinating fashion choices. UGG's Fluff Yeah Slides come to mind for me: cute and comfortable, but versatile. They instantly make any outfit extremely casual. Whether paired with a crop top or a blouse, slippers create that just-hopping-out-of-the-car look that still manages to turn heads.
Arguably, a fan favorite. It seems like everyone has a pair of old Converse or beat up Vans in their closet. They're comfortable. They're timeless. They're sturdy enough to handle day-to-day wear and tear. Not to mention, they go with everything. Women have been unapologetically pairing Chucks with dresses for years. All black variations of the skate shoe are even used in professional attire. You can't go wrong having a pair of these in your closet.
Flats are severely underrated. They are the perfect compromise for those who want both the flat feel of sneakers and the feminine look of heels. A pair of nice flats can make skinny jeans look more dressy. They're essential for business casual looks, especially if you prefer to avoid the extra inches. Much like the low tops, I've never seen these shoes paired with an outfit and not look classy.
These boots are intended to combat harsh weather conditions, but they also have their place in the fashion world. Combat boots and workboots can be styled with everyday clothes to add a rustic feel to any outfit. Make a statement by pairing them with something unlikely, like a sundress or a leather skirt. For a darker look, try combining a pair of black combats with fishnets and a black turtleneck.
For some, wearing sandals might be limited to the summer months. However, if you live in a city where the sun is always shining, you might find yourself slipping into these more often than you think!
Fashionistas love strappy sandals because they are simple and inconspicuous. They add flair without taking attention away from the clothes themselves. The perfect addition to a maxi dress and a must-have combo with shorts in the summer — strappy sandals will always have a place in any gal's wardrobe.
Okay, this last one might not go with every look, but it'll handle everything in between! I've already spoken about the versatility of sneakers and other flat shoes. Why not have a pair of them that pop? While I've mostly referred to shoes as accessories up until this point, sometimes the shoes can be the center of an outfit. A neutral-toned ensemble paired with a bright, busy shoe will stand out. This is your chance to showcase your personality, so choose wisely!
Building a wardrobe that expresses your individuality is harder than it looks. Some people are just aesthetically talented and can put a look together out of anything. Until you get to that point of boldness, it's a good idea to start by snagging a pair of each of these essentials!
