10 Easy DIY Face Masks To Treat Your Dry Skin

Here is why your skin reacts to popular products and ingredients negatively resulting in either acne or repeated dryness!

Dry Skin can be extremely infuriating to deal with, especially if you are constantly working to get results, applying moisturizer every few hours, trying different home remedies, or spending way too much on expensive products with fancy packaging but ending up with more skin issues like acne, irritation, red spots or simply repeated dryness.

You may be wondering why your skin reacts negatively after using certain products or ingredients, resulting in either acne or repeated dryness even after using the right products and home remedies?

Well, the reason your skin reacts negatively after using certain products resulting in added dryness and acne is that the ingredients applied on face are not suitable to your specific skin type and most importantly THE LEVEL OF DRYNESS your skin suffers from.

For instance – Coconut oil has been an extremely popular ingredient used by many to treat dryness and get a natural glow, but 9 out of 10 dermatologists believe that using coconut on your face is actually not a good solution unless you suffer from severely dry skin.

"Coconut oil has one of the highest comedogenic ratings, which means that it could be a big problem for sensitive or blemish-prone skin, explains dermatologist Paul Dean, MD, creator of SkinResource.MD. This means coconut oil can’t penetrate the pores and actually can suffocate your skin and will clog your pores because it sits on top of the skin.”

The greasy nature of coconut acts as a hindrance for your skin to breathe or hydrate and you may end up developing long term acne or dullness. Therefore, it is extremely essential to identify the level of dryness your skin suffers from and treat it accordingly. After 6 hours of research, here are 10 homemade DIY masks that will suit your skin PERFECTLY.

Identifying the level of dryness of your skin and homemade face masks to treat your dryness

1. Severely Dry Skin

If you have ‘Severely Dry Skin’, it means the exterior skin barrier is extremely weak and any product you apply escapes easily, with minimal absorption, leaving your skin cracked, rough, and very tight.

Indications: skin paining if you smile too long, redness around cheek and forehead, cracked skin, flaky skin.

Solutions:

  • Aloe Vera + Honey Face mask

Aloe Vera helps in rejuvenating and hydrating the skin thoroughly and honey acts as the best kind of moisturizer your skin could ever get. Take 2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera gel and mix it with 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply this all over your face and neck and wash off within 30 minutes. This concoction needs to be applied once every day for the best results for severely dry skin.

  • Cucumber + Aloe Vera + honey Face mask

This mask will not only moisturize your skin but will also tighten your pores and brighten your skin. To make this mask, peel a cucumber and toss it into a blender and add 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel to it. Blend until the ingredients form a thick consistent mixture. Smear this cucumber and aloe vera paste onto your face and rinse it with cold water after 30 minutes. Use this every day for great results.

2. Severe to moderate dryness

Severe to moderate dryness could be a result of your skin reacting to extremely cold climate, a change in face wash or soap etc.

Indications: would include patchiness, little redness around the cheek and forehead, cracked skin, etc.

Solution:

  • Banana + honey + curd face mask

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curd freshen dry, dull, and tired-looking skin. It invigorates the skin and gives it a natural glow. Banana is extremely moisturizing for dry skin. Use 1 mashed banana, 1 spoon of curd, and honey and, mix these ingredients to make a smooth paste and apply on your face for 15 minutes. Use twice a week for effective results.

3. Moderate Dryness

Moderate dryness could be healed by applying moisturizer regularly but could recur every now and then due to weather change, change of face wash, or any other skin product.

Indications: Little cracking of skin around nostrils and roughness and slight itchiness.

Solutions:

  • Avocado + honey mask

Avocado is incredibly nourishing and nutritious for dry skin. It is full of healthy fats that have a wonderful moisturizing and collagen-boosting effect on the skin. Take 2 mashed avocados, add one tablespoon of honey and apply this on your face and neck.

  • Curd + honey face mask

Yogurt is rich in healthy natural fats and skin exfoliating acids. These acids get rid of the dry and flaky skin, and the fats moisturize the skin. Yogurt also brightens your skin. Add two tablespoons of curd/yogurt to one tablespoon of honey, and apply this all over your face and neck. Wash off after 20 minutes. Use twice a week for effective results.

4. Moderate to Low Dryness

Moderate to the low level of dryness is extremely common and can be treated easily by using any of the following face masks.

Indications include slight irritation around nostrils, lips, and forehead which are the driest areas of our face. Maybe some itchiness or flakiness.

Solutions :

  • Rice flour + milk face mask

The grainy texture of rice flour helps remove the dead skin cells and get rid of the flakiness on dry skin. Rice starch also has the ability to improve skin barrier function, which can soothe irritated dry skin. Combine 2 tablespoons of rice flour to one tablespoon of honey and milk and apply this face mask once or twice a week depending on your dryness for best results.

  • Milk + turmeric + honey face mask

Milk acts as a great antioxidant and honey is a great moisturizer for skin cells. Turmeric is known for its goodness and skin brightening properties. Add one tablespoon of honey to 1 tablespoon of milk, 1 tablespoon of turmeric and apply this on your face for 20 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water and repeat twice a week for best results.

5. Low-level dryness

A low level of dryness could be due to change in weather, skin cream, or just a result of washing your face too many times a day.

Indicators include slight irritation around dry spots and maybe a little flaky skin.

Solution

  • Rose water and honey

Apply one tablespoon of honey with 2 tablespoons of rosewater on your face and neck. Rinse within 10 minutes and use this concoction twice a week.

  • Banana paste face mask

Grind one banana in the mixer till it forms a smooth paste. Apply this on your face for 20 minutes twice a week for great results.

Here is a video for more general tips to practice if you have dry skin.

I’m sure these home remedies would be extremely helpful and would rejuvenate and heal your skin with a bright glow. If you have extremely sensitive skin, would recommend you do a patch test on your palm or cheek before applying turmeric, almond milk, rose water, and avocado on yourself to be sure that they don't cause any allergy or irritation later. Be sure to discover your degree of dryness and then follow the required remedies religiously and to the tea!
